We all know that grit is a lifesaver on pathways and roads across Britain in the winter months. But should you grit before or after snow has fallen? The answer to this question is a little more complex than you may think.

Let’s begin by looking at how grit works. The principle is simple: it lowers the freezing point of water, reducing the likelihood of ice forming or snow settling. Grit can also melt ice and snow that’s already on the roads.

There is most definitely a right and wrong time (and way) to apply grit, though – it’s not a cure-all solution that will melt every drop of ice and snow it touches. Apply it on top of a layer of snow and its effectiveness will be reduced significantly, as it’ll have to work much harder to try and melt the snow that’s already there. It may eat through much of that snow, but you could still be left with ice beneath, which may be just as dangerous.

Equally, you don’t want to apply grit too early, when the road is still dry. Moisture on the surface will help the salt cling to the road and do its job – drop it on a dry area and it could easily be blown away.

Winter Gritting Peterborough

Here at N J Pacey, our team provides winter gritting services for both public sector and private organisations, as well as individual clients. We know how to spread grit efficiently, thoroughly and, importantly, at the right time.

In our experience, the ideal time to apply the substance is when the roads are damp but before ice has formed (or snow has fallen). Sometimes, this isn’t possible – snow can fall suddenly and unexpectedly. If this is the case, we have snow clearing equipment which can be called upon to swiftly prepare the surface for gritting; with the snow cleared and the surface still damp, the grit will be able to work its magic, keeping the area clear and safe to use.
